On 11 October 2017, the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) announced that it awarded Vricon a contract for a Foreign Comparative Test (FCT) for commercial data, software, and testing to prototype increased resolution and accuracy of 3D geospatial data and automated workflows to reduce manual content creation processes involved in producing enhanced geospatial intelligence data and 3D scene visualization.
The sole source award is based on USSOCOM’s assessment that Vricon “is the only vendor which currently has the highly specialized software algorithms to generate pre-processed 3D data capable of meeting the Government’s requirements…” The contract is valued at approximately $1.3 million.
Big news from the standards community — on 6 September 2017, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) membership approved a new 3D standard for content strategy.
According to the OGC website, “This standard is focused on high performance visualization and spatial analysis in a services or disconnected environment. The standard is referred to as the OGC Indexed 3D Scene Layer (I3S) and the Scene Layer Package Format (SLPK) Specification. These standards are released as an OGC Community Standard.”
I3S is designed for 3D geospatial content — to include the requisite coordinate systems and height models and multiple layer types — and supports the storage and transmission of large data sets.
As Scott Simmons, Executive Director of the OGC Standards Program, states,”The OGC I3S and SLPK Community Standard is an important contribution to the rapidly evolving 3D visualization and analytics community…” We couldn’t agree more.
